Overview

This data summarizes the 2024 moose registration hunt statistics across hunt areas. It includes permits issued, number of hunters who participated, and reported harvest totals to help inform management and participation trends.

Data Analysis

Successful Moose Harvest

Despite having 26 hunters, they only achieved 3 successful harvests. Dividing the harvests by the amount of people hunting results in the success rate, as present here (~12%). It is important to note that based on the data presented, the amount of permits required does not reflect the total harvest or success rate. While having more hunters may increase the total harvest, it does not neccessarily increase the success rate.

Not all hunts are successful. Some hunters may not be able to harvest a moose even if they participate in a hunt. This could be due to factors such as weather, terrain, or the presence of other wildlife. In this instance, none of the 17 people, whether working individually or in groups, were able to make a single harvest, resulting in a 0% success rate.

Glossary

What is RM?
RM stands for Registration Permit Hunt. These are specific hunting opportunities where a hunter must register for a permit to harvest a moose in a designated area as opposed to a general season or draw hunt.
How to calculate success.
Success is calculated by dividing the number of successful hunts by the total number of hunters in a given area.
Draw Hunts
Most drawing hunts are available to residents and nonresidents. Drawing hunts require an application fee and are awarded by lottery. The application period for drawing hunts is during November and December.
Tier II
Tier II hunts are subsistence hunts and are only available for Alaska residents 10 years of age or older.
Registration
Most registration hunts are available for both residents and nonresidents. Generally registration hunts do not limit the number of permits and seasons are closed by emergency order if a harvest goal is met. A few registration hunts limit the number of permits on a first-come, first-served basis.
General Season
The general season harvest is the type of hunting most people are familiar with - the basic hunt where you buy a license, get tags or harvest tickets for big game, and follow the general season dates and bags limits.
Community Subsistence Harvest (CSH) Hunts
Community Subsistence Harvest (CSH) hunts are Tier I subsistence hunts and are only available for Alaska residents 10 years of age or older.
